5 tips for traveling with a carry on bag

For short trips, packing light is a good option because it allows you to move quickly in a short time. Having only one carry-on luggage frees you from long baggage check-in lines and can save you the cost of transporting heavier equipment. Here we share the best practices for light traveling tailored to your needs:

1- The 1-2-3-4-5-6 rule should be your top choice

It is a method that consists of packing what’s necessary:

1 hat

2 pairs of shoes

3 pants or skirts

4 shirts, t-shirts, coats or blouses (depending on the destination and its weather)

5 pairs of socks

6 pieces of underwear (and bra, if applicable)

This universal rule will ensure that you have enough clean clothes for 6 days of travel. In case you have to spend more days at your destination, consider visiting a laundromat to use your clothes more than once (nobody notices and it would be one less worry in your trip preparations).

2- For liquids, the 3-1-1 rule

According to the TSA, this is the best way to ensure that the liquids in your backpack meet their guidelines.

The 3-1-1 rule is very easy to remember:

3.4 ounces or less (in each container)

1 reusable plastic bag where all liquids should fit (one quart).

1 bag per hand luggage

Important: There are exceptions for liquid medications and baby food.

3- Keep your personal documents close to you

Every space in your hand luggage counts! Therefore, consider using a belt pouch, where you can carry: passports, credit cards, cash, flight tickets, etc. Also, having the documents strapped to your waist will ensure that you don’t lose them as you walk to the gate.

3- Once you arrive at your destination, get some sunshine!

If you arrive at your destination in broad daylight, take advantage of it, you will have time to sleep later on! You will most likely feel exhausted, but the sun is your best ally in the new schedule because it keeps you active until night falls and you can rest at a more reasonable hour. Less napping, more partying!

4- Eat well during your vacation to minimize the discomfort caused by jet lag

Not only is it the perfect opportunity to taste delicious local foods, but it is the best way to adapt to new schedules. Eat three times a day. You may not have an appetite at first, but eating at the right time will help you feel better.
